Ultrasound - the inside story

The effect of IMEDEEN can be measured and evaluated by the use of ultrasound skin scanning, as we call it. Ultrasound is used to determine the condition of the skin’s deeper layer, the dermis. The scan is conducted on an area of skin approximately 12 mm wide and can evaluate skin to a depth of approximately 2 mm. An image of the skin will be generated and displayed on a screen and look like this:

  • The uppermost line in the image depicts the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis). The denser this line appears the better the quality of the skin.

  • Below the epidermis lies the dermis, the “supporting” layer of the skin. This should appear on the screen as a coloured pattern that indicates the amount of collagen, elastin and moisture retaining elements in the dermis. The deeper the overall colour, the denser the concentration of protein fibres in the skin, and therefore the better the skin’s condition.

  • White areas indicate skin damage.

In other words, dark colours indicate skin in good condition. The greater the coloured areas and the better the distribution of these areas, the better the skin quality.

The effect of IMEDEEN can be followed by the use of ultrasound. The following ultrasound pictures are taken from a year-long dermatological study showing the skin improvements after three months and after one year of IMEDEEN usage. The study included 144 women, aged between 35-50, all of whom had mild to moderate signs of skin ageing.

At the end of the study, a statistically significant improvement was shown in all objective measuring tests, including the ultrasound scannings. It was concluded that IMEDEEN is active in the dermis, where it improves basic skin quality, as well as the skin’s natural ability to retain moisture. This is opposed to moisturizing creams and lotions that work only on the skin’s surface.

The first scan shows that the surface of the skin is uneven, indicating a less optimal dermis. Examining the dermis, it is clear that there is an irregular pattern of collagen, elastin and moisture retaining elements. The white areas show UV or environmental damage, all of which indicate a skin that is likely to age prematurely.

By month three, you can see improvements to both the epidermis (the skin you see) and the dermal layer.

On the final scan, after one year’s use of IMEDEEN, the image contains a much more even pattern of dark colours, which represent an increase in the amount of essential collagen, elastin and moisture retaining elements. The result is softer, smoother and more supple skin.

Over time, IMEDEEN can help visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles whilst improving the skin’s overall quality, dermal density and moisture balance.
